A four-week course for pre-freshmen through sophomore students at Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore Island in the Gulf of Maine. The course includes daily fieldwork, boat trips, outdoor adventure, and practices for sustainable living. Intensive lectures, laboratory, and fieldwork occur in a learning environment emphasizing individual skill building, project design and execution, and collaboration with faculty and peers. We explore four major themes—ecology, behavior, development, and genomics—and connect them using examples from evolution. Social issues discussed range from global environmental change to sustainable fisheries, emerging infectious diseases, and stem cell research.
