The Biomes Expedition exemplifies all that is right about traditional Liberal Arts education - guiding students to think critically, pushing participants to go beyond their own self-imposed boundaries, allowing students opportunities to discover and construct their own knowledge of the world based on epiphanies, believing that students learn the most when they are given the challenge of constructing their own learning goals. It was thrilling to work with my colleagues David and Sigrid Anderson as they modeled effective learning for us all. Seeing the spectacular commitment of the students to learning while witnessing their tranformation over 12 weeks confirmed my understanding of what constitutes effective education - learning that transforms everyone in the community of learners. Seeing the continuation of that transformation post-Expedition is proof of the lasting power of inspiration in education.
