"Khao Sok National Park in Southern Thailand is an amazing place. It is covered by the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world, huge limestone mountains shooting straight up in the air, deep valleys, breathtaking lakes, exciting caves, wild animals and much more. ." (Khaosok.com)
Khao Sok is the wettest area in Thailand. This extreme rainfall is due to monsoons that come from both the Pacific and Indian Ocean. The wettest season of the year falls between May and November. The dryest time of the year falls between December and April. However rain can fall at any time of the year.
The rain forest is some of the oldest on the planet. This is due to the area's constant equatorial position for the past 160 years. Also since Khao Sok is a small area and positioned between two oceans, the ice ages have had little affect on it. Species diversity is very high due to the fact that during the last ice age, the ocean levels were so low that land bridges formed between Malaysia, Borneo and some Indonesian islands. This species diversity contains 48 mammal species, 311 bird species, 38 bat species and an unknown number of reptile and insect species.
The topography of Khao Sok is also affected by the limestone mountains which range from the usual ground level, 200m above sea level, to the highest peak which reaches 960m above sea level.
