About Me:

I am a senior here at Hiram College; I have been a four year letterman on the football team, I will be graduating in the spring with a communication major, with minors in political science and management.  After graduation I plan to enter into real estate development.  Taking this class had allowed me to become more educated on how we are currently developing land, and how it affects the water we drink and the natural wetlands that we are destroying by developing in these ways.

Course Components

Through this class we learned the role that wetlands play in world we live in.  We now understand that by continuing to have disregard for regulations could lead to severe water problems sooner than we think.  We also learned that for years our government has ignored the scientific facts presented to they by experts, and if we continue to operate in these ways soon our water sources could be whipped away by continued depletion of wetlands and disregard for regulations.  The course was designed to question the norms set in place for us by society, by learning about water and runoff we understand that when you spray your lawn with fertilizer you are adding toxins to the ground water at alarming rates.

Activates

Two of the three class days a week were spent in the field.  This time was spent learning by doing, rather than the typical approach of the college classroom.  In class we ran tests on streams and wetlands in the area, using different aspects to access how healthy the wetland was we were able to give it a score.  Other activates includes being able to point out invasive species, understanding what role we play in protecting our water and how the future will be dictated by the sources of fresh water.

Skills Developed

This class has allowed me to develop different skills that otherwise would have gone without use in college.  Maybe the best skill learned was the use of google documents, google docs make a lot of sense to me and is something we used to share files and turn in work, I’m sure that soon in the future I will be able to use this skill.  I also better understand the world in which we live and how global warming and the misuse of water could eventually lead to serious problems in the near future.  Understanding that we are the next generation faced with these problems gives me motivation to find the best solution to these issues for future generations.
