My name is Kevin Deidrick. I am currently taking Biology 101: Beginning Field Biology taught by Professor Dennis Taylor. The course is teaching me many things that I will use for the rest of my life.

Components

This class has many components. One major component is that we are working in learning communities every day. Our learning communities are teams where we discuss everything going on in class. Another component is the technology of this website and GoogleDocs to post everything that we are learning. The final major component of this class is observation. We observe all of our surroundings to try to learn what is going on in the world.

Activities

The activities of this class involve being in the field as much as possible. We have done ORAM tests on wetlands and QHEI tests on streams. Also, I have performed community service at Bonnie Castle on campus. I worked for ten hours with my some of my classmates and we accomplished a lot.

Skills Developed

I have developed many skills in this class which are transferable to the real-world. One skill is working in my learning community team. My team has gotten along great, bonded, and really learned a lot from one another. Another skill developed is my computer and technology skills. Before this class I had never created a webpage or used GoogleDocs and now I feel very comfortable doing both. Yet another skill is learning the trait of observation. I am learning to always pay attention to everything that is going on to grasp a better understanding of how the world works. I think the biggest skill this class has emphasized is communication. Communication is key in anything you do in life, but in our current time period it is lacking. This class emphasizes communication every day, either directly or indirectly. Working in our learning communities and talking with Professor Taylor, we learn so much from each other. Communicating all class like we do allows us to see different point-of-views and things that we may not have thought of ourselves. Overall, this class has given us all skills that we can go out and use for the rest of our lives.

Major and Career Goals

I am an Accounting and Financial Management major and a Management minor. I am graduating with the class of 2012. I am currently seeking a career in corporate finance. I plan on obtaining my MBA after gaining some work experience. I hope to one day be a high-level executive at a Fortune 500 company.
