Community Service Project

Components- The overall go objective of our project is to improve our impact on watersheds. We plan to create structures that are sustainable for the environment. The project takes place in the village of Hiram, but we hope a larger community will recognize our efforts and join in the sustainability movement.

Activities- Our first project this fall is a house named Bonnie Castle. This house will have a rock wall made of sandstone thanks to the Hiram students. The herb garden in the back yard will be one worth a visit in the near future thanks to Lucy and Dennis. Invasive species are being removed to capture the most impressive native vegetation around this area.

Skills- As a group we are learning more about plant life. When removing an invasive plant it is best to uproot the entire plant. The rock wall being improved must have a stable base in order to remain sustainable. We have a greater understanding for what a garden should look like.

Watersheds- My current impact on our watershed is negative in some respects, but I feel this is due to my lack of knowledge on the subject. I am learning more about the activities that negatively impact our watershed. Cutting grass and using pesticides will have a critical impact on our watershed. It is crucial that as a human race, we recognize that we are all living in a watershed and we all affect the watershed. This is a great start to changing our behavior.

On A Personal Note- My name is Nate Arp and I study Accounting at Hiram College. I plan on becoming a practicing Certified Public Accountant after graduating from Hiram. My next step is to attend graduate school for a Master of Accountancy or Tax. I would enjoy traveling for work but would hope to remain stationed primarily in the northeast Ohio. I drive a race car in my leisure time.
