Science Summit Successful The ISLS Science Summit showcased student work

The ISLS Science Summit at the Great Lakes Science Center on the 9th of April 2010 attracted a crowd over 400.  The summit showcasee student work - the undergraduate research of the Choose Ohio First Scholars and learning objects of the ISLS learning communities from 2007, 2008 and 2009 ISLS STEM Academies.   Glenn Odenbrett, project director for GLISTEN (Great Lakes Innovative Stewardship Through Education Network kicked off the summit with comments on the link between improved learning and civic engagement, illustrated by many student posters on display.  Dennis Taylor, Science Co-Director of ISLS gave the keynote on Real Science, Real Learning:  Science Education for Uncertain Times.  The program included a buffet of local foods, exploration of the GLSC exhibition Water: H2O = Life and ended with a video produced by David Smeltzer of Kent State University on the ISLS program followed by the Omnimax Film Mysteries of the Great Lakes.  The enthusism of the student participants clearly illustrated role of active hands on learning encouraging students to pursue careers in science.
