The Biomes of the World 2010 Expedition, an interdisciplinary study abroad program integrates learning from three disciplines: Ecology, Literature and Writing and incorporates service learning, following the design of SENCER courses. SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) is a program funded by the National Science Foundation which applies the science of learning to courses that engage students in active hands on experiences tied to the communities in which they learn. The Biomes program, modeled on SENCER principles incorporates student reflection on experiences tied to courses that engage local communities. The Biomes 2010 expedition included community service learning opportunities in at the Woodstock School in Mussoorie, India and at Rashdoo Atoll in the Maldives where participants brought active hands-on learning modules to k-12 classrooms.
