Virtual Wetland Identifcation

Abstract: Field trips are expensive, time consuming and threatening to many students. We present three artificial student-designed wetlands, each with samples of plants that may or may not be found in wetlands, examples of possible soil types, soil maps, and site photos obtained digitally.  Participants will work with student peer mentors in discovering if the sites are wetlands based upon the material provided.  Virtual wetlands can be used by schools with no wetlands nearby or provide a pre-field trip training tool for learning real wetland protocols, increasing student interest and learning of science content while decreasing the threat to today’s cyberstudents.
