The Mahan House is home to the Center for Literature and Medicine. The house is one of the oldest structures in Hiram, and was once home to the Registrar of Hiram College, Lawrence Underwood. Professor James Barrow created the plan for Mahan to take advantage of historic landscapes. The riotous bed of daylilies on the south lawn of the house is one of the most colorful sites in Hiram. To the east the subdued rose, lilac, and fern beds make a splendid counterpoint to the large mature Rhododendron. To the North old varieties of local Spirea add a historic flavor to the house.
