On Urban Sprawl, Chao Phraya
River in Bangkok

It’s such a paradox of a situation.... A city grows out of prosperity, yet as the city grows it depletes the natural resources it relies upon for that prosperity. (Natural History journal excerpt, Erin Sams, 28 Jan 2008)
On Plant Adaptation, Haleakala Crater, Maui
Photo: Erin Sams
Inside the crater of Haleakala was vast, rocky remains of several hundred years of cold, wind-torn, lifeless volcanic destruction. But there were, in fact, plenty of herbaceous plants collected in groups which dotted the crater in areas where it looked like water from a water table or cloud precipitation flowed. Silverswords, junipers, and similar varieties added color to the barren black and mahogany landscape. (Natural History journal excerpt, Erin Sams, 25 Jan 2008)
